Thorough preparation and proper presentation are prime factors for a successful presentation. First and foremost, there always should be a good reason for making a presentation. Your presentation must be timely. Too many presentations not only are poorly planned but also are lacking in purpose.
There are 3 general purposes for a presentation - "to tell", "to sell" or to entertain
A "to tell" presentations seeks to update, inform, explain, describe or narrate. A "to sell" presentation can be either to inspire or persuade. With an entertain purpose the idea is to entertain the listeners - such as an after-dinner speech.
To make an effective presentation there must be a purpose. Without it you risk wasting your time and the your listener's time.
